Who We Are & How We Diagnose Roof Problems

Tile Top Roofing Specialists Ltd (Registered in England & Wales No. 16264372) is a local roofing firm built on practical trade work rather than sales pitches. We are not a national call centre passing jobs to unknown subcontractors. Every inspection, repair, and complete re-roof is carried out by our own experienced roofers.

Thirty years of working on roofs in the South West teaches you that a damp patch on a bedroom ceiling rarely sits directly underneath the hole on the outside. Rainwater driven by Atlantic gales will get past a perished chimney step flashing or a cracked valley tile, run down the underside of the felt or along a timber rafter, and drip onto the plasterboard several metres away.

Instead of guessing from the pavement or quoting for a full replacement when a straightforward repair will do, we get up onto the roof space or launch our inspection drone to see the defect close up. We check whether pre-war natural slates are suffering from general nail sickness or just a couple of slipped courses, whether a flat roof is ponding because the timber firrings have sagged, and whether rotting fascia boards are actually caused by perished eaves felt letting water run behind the guttering.

Clear Written Quotes With Photographs

Because homeowners cannot easily climb up onto scaffolding to look at a split lead valley or decayed timber battens, we take clear photographs during our inspection. We show you what has failed, explain how we will put it right, and give you a fixed written quote before any work begins.

Built for South West Weather: Materials & Site Standards

Roofs around the Tamar Estuary, the South Hams coast, and high up on Dartmoor take a heavy beating from driving rain, salt air, and winter freeze-thaw cycles. Cutting corners on fixings or underlay thicknesses guarantees callbacks, so we stick strictly to proven trade materials and tidy site habits.

01

Proper Fixings & Underlays

Salt air near the coast quickly corrodes cheap galvanised nails. On natural slate and exposed coastal roofs, we fix with copper clout nails or stainless steel hooks alongside treated 25x50mm graded timber battens and high-tensile vapour-permeable membranes.

Where old mortar-bedded ridges and verges have cracked open in high winds, we convert them to mechanically fixed dry ridge and dry verge systems that clamp each tile directly to the roof structure.

02

Heavy-Duty Lead & Flat Roofs

We dress chimney aprons, back gutters, and step flashings using Code 4 and Code 5 milled lead, bossed and wedged into the brickwork joints in proper bays so the metal can expand and contract without splitting.

On flat extensions and garages, we strip rotten chipboard back to the joists, fit timber firrings to create a positive fall of at least 1:80 so rainwater clears to the gutter, and lay fresh 18mm OSB3 tongue-and-groove decking before installing GRP fibreglass, single-ply EPDM rubber, or three-layer torch-on felt.

03

Respecting Your Property

When stripping a pitched roof, we work in controlled sections so your loft space is never left exposed to overnight rain. At the eaves, we always fit rigid uPVC support trays so the underlay drains cleanly into the gutter rather than rotting the fascia board.

On the ground, we lay protective boards over driveways beneath skips, use ladder standoff brackets so we never crush your guttering, clear rubble at the end of every shift, and run a magnetic sweep across lawns and paths to pick stray nails up.
